Updating Democracy

It isn’t too soon to start planning some fixes to our system here in the United States.

Here are some possible things. Some may require constitutional amendments.

  1. Money out of politics. Get rid of Citizens United. Require public disclosure of the sources and amounts of all political contributions.
  2. Term limits for congress and the supreme court
  3. The president cannot refuse to spend money allocated by congress
  4. The president cannot fire independent agency administrators
  5. The president cannot declare that something is an insurrection without congress.
  6. The president cannot deploy the national guard for longer than 2 weeks without congressional approval.
  7. The president should be subject to civil and criminal prosecution for actions taken while in office.
  8. The supreme court shadow docket ruling must be confirmed by actual hearings
  9. We need to do something about gerrymandering, although I don’t know what.
  10. The senate should be able to withdraw consent for any senate approved officer.
  11. We should have question time, as they do in England, where once a week or month the President answers questions from congress. Publicly.
  12. The president cannot fire civil servants without due process and job related reasons.
  13. Laws should have sunsets. Congress should have to reenact anything older than 20 years.
  14. Repealing laws should have a lower requirement than creating new ones.
  15. Get rid of civil forfeiture.
  16. Make it easier to sue law enforcement for violations of rights.
  17. No masked law enforcement gangs
  18. Dial back the ability of the president to start wars.

What else?
